LA LA Land (2016) Storyline The. La tortue rouge (2016). About Maplewood Theatre. Online Film Critics Society: January 3, 2017. Its multicultural birth and the lack of dialogue only help this beautiful film transcend borders with its poignant fairytale. It’s like the anti- Tower of Babel. It’s no surprise it picked up a Special Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes earlier this year. The film opens on a lone figure among the waves, shipwrecked after a ferocious storm. It’s the first sign the filmmakers have been incredibly thoughtful with their use of sound, the cruel slapping of the waves breaking against each other as our protagonist gasps for breath, struggling to stay afloat. Later on, a tsunami thunders across the island with a cacophonous fury as if the bamboo was breaking right there in the room with you. Charmingly simple. Source: Supplied. The man finds himself marooned on a deserted island with only the crabs that crawl up and down the beach for company. His attempts at escaping are thwarted by a mysterious thump from beneath the water whenever he tries to sail away on his makeshift bamboo rafts. No matter how big and secure he builds the raft, it continues to be destroyed by the violent jolt from below, until he finally comes face- to- face with the red turtle that’s hellbent on preventing him from leaving. Dudok di Wit recently told the Toronto International Film Festival that The Red Turtle was partly about an exploration of “Nature with a capital N”, about a “deep and profound awe” for it. He spoke eloquently about sea creatures disappearing into the ocean and becoming “part of the infinity”. In someone else’s hands, that sentiment could come off as trite or groan- inducing but The Red Turtle manages to skirt any such pretensions. A fairytale spirit. Source: Supplied. The Red Turtle’s traditional animation is paired well with its touching and beautiful narrative. What really stands out, though, is the music. Dudok de Wit worked with another composer before he found Laurent Perez Del Mar, whose harmonious score lifts the film to a higher level of cinematic achievement. It all works together so well and you can’t help but be invested in these characters’ connections to each other and to nature. Dudok de Wit also manages to make the insular world of the island feel full and vibrant, despite its constraints. Everything about this fantastical story is enchantingly simple. But don’t be fooled by its almost meditative mood, The Red Turtle is one of the most affecting films of the year. Rating: 4. 5/5. The Red Turtle is out in cinemas on Thursday, September 2.
